If you think all wineries are fancy places that only some enjoy, you haven’t been to McGrail Vineyards. This family-owned Northern California winery prides itself on being a down-to-earth spot where everyone is welcome and having fun is priority number one.
With the first seeds planted by Robert Livermore in the 1840’s, Livermore Valley is among California’s oldest wine producing regions. In addition to over 4,000 acres of vineyards and 50+ wineries, the region’s the historic center of California Chardonnay.

McGrail’s Origins in the Livermore Valley Wine Region
Founded in April 2008 by Jim and Ginger McGrail (who had been growing grapes since 1999), the vineyards lay 45 miles east of San Francisco. The setting is perfect for catching a concert, enjoying a picnic and great small-lot wine – especially Cabernet Sauvignon. Expansive grounds overlook nearby rolling hills, providing a scenic backdrop for local musicians, food festivals and special events.
Furnishing the Outdoor Space
In 2021, Ginger and Heather McGrail (the president of the winery) decided to replace the folding furniture used throughout their lounge areas. They did research and started to explore all the outdoor furniture stores in the area.
Ginger preferred the stability of aluminum outdoor tables and seating, fearing that wicker might not last. With the help of a designer friend, the mother-daughter duo spent many hours browsing local shops and evaluating options in person. According to Heather, she and her mom “really wanted to touch and feel all the furniture” to ensure the right fit.

Partnering with Terra Outdoor
While visiting the Terra Outdoor showroom in San Ramon, the McGrail family found furniture they really liked. They continued looking elsewhere, but didn’t see anything they wanted as much as pieces from the Tiburon and Belvedere collections.
Making several trips back to Terra to be sure, they partnered with store manager Carlos Montecino and his knowledgeable staff. “Carlos and his team were super-helpful – I asked a million questions,” Ginger said. In the end, both her friend and her son ultimately bought outdoor furniture from Terra, too.
Delivery Was A Snap
Getting the furniture delivered to the winery was also a wonderful experience. “The Terra team was amazing and great to work with,” said Heather. “They set up the furniture perfectly the day before we had an event and got rid of all the packaging. It all went so well.”
In addition to the outdoor furniture, the McGrails also purchased covers to protect their investments. Ginger said, “The furniture is always covered unless we’re using it.”
“The covers have stayed on and held up well,” Heather added, noting multiple big storms that hit the Livermore Valley wine region earlier this year. “They’re super-easy to use.”
